Ohannes Petros XVIII Kasparian |
(1982-1999) |
The 250th anniversary Patriarch
He was born in Egypt. During the first 11 years of his patriarchate, Ohannes -Petros XVIII found himself in front of new questions.
Indeed, the patriarchate survived the condition following the genocide of 1915, when the Lebanese war shocking Beirut, the center of the patriarchate, put the hierarchy in front of financial, organical and spiritual troubles.
Because of the political events in the Arab world, and especially because of the Lebanese war, the believers to his patriarchate, of the Middle East and the European continent left the country and traveled to America, Canada, Australia creating a vast diaspora.
The independence of Armenia and the religious freedoms gave way to the patriarchate to spread its pastoral carefulness on the Catholics of Armenia, who were under the authority of the communists and were in need of a religious renewal.
These problems insist on the necessity of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate, after existing for 250 years.
